The Organic Acids Test provides a broad view of metabolic health, nutritional status, and gut microbiome health. The results of the OAT test allows your functional practitioner to receive a more complete picture of what’s going on in internally regarding your metabolic health and nutritional status in order to create a personalized functional nutrition care plan for you. The test assesses several different categories including microbial overgrowth (fungal/bacterial), mitochondrial health, neurotransmitter metabolites, toxic exposure (mold/heavy metal), methylation/detoxification, and nutrient needs.
Organic acids are acidic byproducts of cellular metabolism that are produced by living organisms—including humans, bacteria, and fungi—and are typically excreted in urine. These compounds are the downstream products of various metabolic pathways, such as microbial activity, energy production, detoxification, neurotransmitter synthesis, and nutrient metabolism. When metabolic pathways function efficiently, organic acids are processed and excreted at expected levels. But if enzymatic function is impaired, nutrient cofactors are deficient, or toxins/ microbial byproducts inhibit pathways, these can become blocked, causing abnormal organic acid buildup in urine. Evaluation of these downstream products of metabolic pathways provides insight into potential nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, toxicity, and other imbalances that could be contributing to clinical complaints.
The Organic Acids Test (OAT) provides a comprehensive nutritional and metabolic snapshot of an individual’s overall health. The OAT measures 76 organic acids from one easy to collect urine sample.
What Is The Organic Acids Test?
The Organic Acids Test or OAT is used to provide insights into mitochondrial dysfunction, gut health (dysbiosis or imbalances in the gut leading to GI symptoms), nutritional deficiencies (vitamins/minerals), and various metabolic pathways which includes detoxification, energy production, and various neurotransmitter metabolites. Mitochondrial health is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to addressing root causes of health conditions and improving overall health. There are many different organs in the human body and each organ works together in harmony to achieve optimal health and long-term nourishment.
You can search the free database containing detailed information about the small molecule metabolites found in the human body that are listed below by clicking here.
Intentional Healing, Root-Cause Solutions, and Long Term Nourishment
Each person is unique and this is recognized in a personalized functional nutrition assessment and intervention plan that engages and empowers the patient in this process to restore optimal function, manage symptoms and promote overall health and well-being.
Functional nutrition addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. We look at it from a root-cause perspective and create a focus on prevention through nutrition, therapeutic diets, targeted supplementation, interpretation of conventional and/or functional lab testing, botanicals, detoxification protocols, exercise, and stress management tools.
My storefront is linked here to order functional labs, which is signed off by a nationally-licensed physician, to assess for gut health issues, hormonal imbalances, or vitamin/mineral deficiencies. If you need help creating a personalized functional nutrition care plan based on the interpretation of any of the above functional labs, you can work with us here.
